SPICES OF INDIA

·       Spices like Cumin, Mustard, Pepper, Fennel, Cinnamon, Cloves and Turmeric are very important in Indian Foods.

·       In Tamil Kari means “sauce”.

·       The colonization of the Americas and Asia had its roots in the spice trade.

·       In 1492-  Christopher Columbus went in search of India but found the America and the Chilli instead .

·       Around 1498-  Vasco d agama went around Africa to reach Kozhikode, Kerala- the Home of Pepper.

·       They were followed by the Arabs and the Romans.

·       Even before the Greek and Roman civilizations about 7000 years ago- spices from India were traded with Mesopotamia, China, Sumeria, Egypt and Arabia.

·       The 1st century Indian writings talks about the Cloves traded with Roman Empire.

·       During Middle ages :
1.   a pound of Ginger was worth a price of sheep
2.   a pound of mace= price of 3 sheeps pr half the price of a cow.

PEPPER- CROWN JEWEL OF SPICES- BLACK GOLD.

·       Indian farmers starts trading the Pepper even before 5000 yrs ago to Egypt, China, Greece and Rome.
·       The Romans have sent 120 ships a year from Egypt to trade with India to bring enormous quantities of pepper.

CINNAMON

·       Chinese wrote about its medical value before 2700 BCE.
·       The Greeks, Romans and the Egyptians bought cinnamons from India.
·       The Venetians taxed Cinnamon that was brought from India to Egypt and the Mediterranean and grew rich.

·       Today we export Pepper, cardamom, ginger, chilli, turmeric, coriander and cumin.

·       One of the earliest grown Indian plant was Sugarcane.
