SEA TURTLES- SHEKAR DATTARI
* Sea Turtles spend most of their life in the sea.
* There are 7 species of marine/sea turtles in the
world.
* Of them 5 are in India:
1. Olive Ridley
2. The Hawksbill
3. The Green SeaTurtle
4. The Loggerhead
5. The Leatherback
* Fully grown Olive ridley weighs- 35 kg
* The Largest is Leatherback- Grows to 2.2m &
weighs at 700 kg.
* They come ashore to lay eggs.
* Odisha in India is known for Mass nesting/
Arribada for Olive Ridley Turtles.
* The other four species of turtles have become
extremely rare in India.
* During the months of January and March,
Female Olive Ridleys come ashore at night to
lay eggs.
* Its nest on the ground is 45m deep and lays upto
100 eggs.
* The eggs are left to incubate under the warmth
of the sun.
* Eggs hatch after 45-60 days, Temperature
inside the egg decides the sex of the embryo- If
it is 27-28 degree Celsius then its a Male, If it
is 30 degree then female hatchlings are
produced.
