     IN QUEST OF INDIA'S FREEDOM

* NETHAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE was born in Cuttack, Orissa on 23rd Jan, 1897.
* His father Janakinath Bose was a famous lawyer.
*At age five, he studied in a European school, he did not learn his mother tongue Bengali.
* At age 12- another school where his headmaster BENI MADHAV DAS kindled the spirit of Patriotism in him.
* He and his friends looked after the sick when the village was struck by small pox.
* At age 15, he was influenced by SWAMI VIVEKANANDHA and his teachings. he practised yoga and understood "Work is Workship".
* His mother Prabavati- taught him about great traditions of India.
* Joined Presidency college in Calcutta after securing 2nd rand in exams.
* Rude behaviour of Professor Oden - called Indians as 'Stupid natives" and " Barbarians".
* As Subhas as leader, many students protested against Oden, finally Oden apologised.
* Later, Professor Oden appreciated Subhas for his performance in "University Military Training Corps"-- forerunner of our NCC.
* Nethaji organised "Nursing Brotherhood"- to serve the poor and the sick.
* In 1919- he went to England to compete for the Indian Civil service Examinations.
* He came 4th in the merit, but left the apprenticeship halfway and came to India in 1921 after the Jallianwala bagh massacre.
* Nethaji became the Principal of the National College, Calcutta.
* Chief Executive officer- Calcutta Municipal Corporation.
*Nethaji was arrested and sent to prison in Rangoon, Burma for protesting against British clothes.
* Nethaji was released after huge protests by the people.
* He decided to get help from Japan, Italy and Germany.
* Nethaji founded the Indian National Army(INA) in 1941 in Singapore.
* Nethaji's words- " Every dawn is preceded by darkness. The dawn is therefore close at hand. So cheer up! Hold the Indian flag aloft and fight on!"
* On 21st october 1943- Azad Hind Fauj was set up on foreign soil.
* He was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously.
