⛽FLEX-FUEL VEHICLES & INDIA'S ETHANOL MOBILTIY PUSH

⛽Flex-Fuel Vehicles & India's Ethanol                     Mobility Push

📍 Why in News?

The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted the importance of Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) during the launch of Hero MotoCorp's flex-fuel motorcycles compatible with E20–E85 ethanol blends.

📚 What are Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)?

A Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV) is a vehicle with a specially designed internal combustion engine that can operate on different blends of petrol and ethanol without requiring engine modification by the user.

Fuel BlendComposition
    E20        20% Ethanol + 80% Petrol
    E85        85% Ethanol + 15% Petrol

📊 India's Ethanol Blending Journey

    Year                    Ethanol Blending
    2014
                            1.5%
    2025                            20%

🌱 Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced nearly

90 lakh metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions

  • Supports
    • Green Mobility
    • Net Zero goals
    • Low Carbon Economy

👨‍🌾 Benefits to Farmers

The programme has transformed farmers from

🌾 Annadatas (Food Providers)

                                to

Urjadatas (Energy Providers)

by creating additional demand for

  • Sugarcane
  • Maize
  • Damaged food grains
  • Other ethanol feedstocks

Importance for India

1. Energy Security

✔ Reduces dependence on imported crude oil.

India imports nearly

88.5% of its crude oil requirement.

2. Foreign Exchange Savings

Lower crude imports mean lower import bills.

3. Environmental Protection

  • Lower Carbon Emissions
  • Cleaner Combustion
  • Better Air Quality

4. Rural Economy

Creates stable income for farmers through ethanol production.

5. Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Promotes domestic fuel production and reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels.

📝 Key Terms to Remember

Ethanol

  • Renewable biofuel
  • Produced by fermentation of sugars and starch
  • Mainly obtained from
    • Sugarcane
    • Molasses
    • Maize
    • Broken Rice

Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP)

A Government programme that mixes ethanol with petrol to reduce fossil fuel consumption.

Flex-Fuel Engine

An engine capable of operating on multiple ethanol-petrol blends such as

  • E20
  • E30
  • E50
  • E85

without major performance issues.
